Pro Djembe Drumscome in a range of sizes, though manufacturers may use different size designations it is the size of the head or playing surface that is the key selection factor in determining the tone and pitch of the drums.
There is a common misconception that as a beginner you should play a smaller drum. This is absolutely not true. You SHOULD get the largest drum you can play comfortably based on your physical size and stature. If unsure ALWAYS opt for the larger drum. The reason for this is simple. The smaller the drum the less tonal separation between the slap and the tone. This makes smaller drums more difficult to play with a broad range of tones, without a firm grasp of proper technique, which takes months to develop.
Using the chart below selecting the proper size Djembe should be relatively easy. If you are between 5 and 6 feet tall you should play the Extra Large Djembe. If you are between 4 and 5 feet tall you should play the Large Djembe. If you are between 3 and 4 feet tall you should play the Medium Djembe.

The sizing above should be clear in most cases, but again if you are unsure, then just opt for the larger drum, especially if you are pre-teen or teenage and expect to grow taller, get the larger drum and just grow into it. It should be noted that while an adult or teen would sit or stand with a strap to play the Djembe, a small child will typically be most comfortable standing facing the drum placed upright on the floor. While we do offer Small Djembe Drums these are primarily sized for children or for an adult who is specifically looking for a high pitched tone to complement a lower pitched drum.
